I caught up with Caroline D’Amore pre-show at the very famous Roxy Night Club as she prepared to present all her music live. It all started as I arrived at the Roxy. I got there a bit early cause I didn’t want any trouble at the door. I was actually there before the security and door people got there, just as the band was finishing the final touches on stage. I went inside and then upstairs and I started to look for any sign of life. It wasn’t until I walked into one of the dressing rooms that I noticed my friend and my photographic subject, Caroline D’Amore (http://www.carolinedamore.net). She was running around getting all the final preparations done with make up, hair, and everything else that goes on before the performance. Her performance was incredible. It was choreographed by Brittany Hughes. After her show, I captured Caroline D’Amore hanging out and kissing with her boyfriend Bobby Alt, who is the singer and drummer of Street Drum Corps. I quickly took the opportunity to have them pose for a few artistic photos of the couple on the red and blue running lights along the upstairs hallway. I told them to get into a position and then not to move. I was going to be shooting at 1/8th of a second, even my heartbeat, could make my shots blurry. Somehow, I was able to pull it off.

The exhibition showcases and contrasts the coverage of pop culture between the 1970′s and today. Highlights on display from Elterman’s early work include images of Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, David Bowie and Madonna. “The Seventies was a different era than what we are experiencing today,” says Elterman. “I was hanging out and photographing icons who were also cultural heroes, like The Ramones and Bob Dylan. Sure, finding the true icons is like finding a diamond in the rough, but talent today still needs to be photographed for the magazines and now especially for the internet, where huge audiences wait every moment for the next image.”
“It is incredibly important as a photographer for my imagery to stand out from the millions of images on the market, and that is what makes my profession so interesting,” says Christopher Peterson. “I try to achieve an iconic image that will catch the editor’s eye and hold the attention of the reader. Most importantly, I want my images have a sense of style and elegance. Today it is all about the fashion in the streets and what brands the stars are wearing.”
Elterman made his first trip to Tokyo in 1979 with pop star Leif Garret. “Japan has always been a very warm and special market for my early photographs. I worked for Music Life and Rock Show magazines for years, starting in 1975. These great magazines started my career in the photo world,” says Elterman. “I am honored and emotionally touched to be part of this exciting photo exhibition in Japan and I look forward to meeting as many fans as possible.”
Tabloid is produced by Isao Murayama, Masayuki Asayama and Yoshiihiro Ikka, head of Libro Arte Publishing. “It all started when Brad visited my photo gallery bar in Shinjuku last spring. Looking at the images in his book… they brought me to 1970′s America. I was deeply moved by those timeless images and decided to show them to as many people as possible,” commented Ikka. Legendary Tokyo photo agent Asayama added, “I am thrilled to be involved in this historical event. It would be the first celebrity photo exhibition in Japan showing both archive images and present day celebrity images. Japanese people will love them.” Producer Murayama summed it up saying, “An accumulation of coincidences brought us an exhibition of Brad Elterman in Japan. God knows when it would happen again. The essential value of the collaboration and materials related to this event is huge and will have a big impact.”

The team’s goal is to get the celebrity into the media and BuzzFoto is the conduit to get them there. It is challenging to be a celebrity in this town without BuzzFoto. Brad Elterman and Henry Flores describe the old method of getting into the media, the red carpet which they describe as boring and blasé. The new red carpet is out in the street.

Unfortunately what happens is that initially, you work with young celebrities when they are just up and coming and they pose for you and then they get their break. You call their publicist and then they don’t want to do photos anymore. However, it really doesn’t work that way, because the magazines and the public want them photos of them even more. The talent, in a sense want to turn off the faucet after stardome, but what they have essentially done is opened it even more and they could never turn it off. Brad then goes on to quote a line from The Godfather II, “this is the business we have chosen.”

Yes, these are challenging times in the photo industry. We hear rumors all the time, but at the end of the day, this is not the death of the photo business. We have been around for decades and have seen the market fluctuate. It is interesting how we have struck a nerve with the doomsayers, but we what we have that others lack and that is the enthusiasm for our craft in this marvelous industry. The market for paparazzi imagery is flooded and duplication of photos is rampant, but our numbers increase each month. Our creativity, enthusiasm and strategizing is paying off and we are not going anywhere. Can you image Picasso without a paintbrush? That would be us without the photo industry.

Thank you to all of our wonderful photographers who have helped us grow in the past three and a half years. It has been an incredible ride that will only get better.

New paparazzi and agencies come and go and Buzz Foto continues to grow. We were in London last week and even though the market in the UK is challenged, we found that everyone wanted to be part of the Buzz Foto brand.

So at the end of the day, what are we all about? We only work with professionals who have a passion for their craft and not a fast buck. We do everything by the book with no exceptions. Our goal is to make beautiful iconic elegant paparazzi photographs that will hang in the Museum Of Modern Art in New York or the Tate Modern in London.

She was about to cross the street and I needed to get that shot of her jaywalking and impeding traffic.  I pulled over right way and with my long lens, I took a few shots of her crossing the street.  She made her way to interMix clothing boutique which is right across the street from the Ivy Restaurant.  As you might have guessed it, there were a few paparazzi door stepping that restaurant.  I got my shots and no…  I did not get jumped.  I was exclusive the entire time.

A few hours later, guess where I found Nicky Hilton again.  Yup!  She was getting a proper hosedown along Beverly Blvd as she made her way to the coffee shop.   I pulled over because I knew that my shots were not that hot from earlier that day since I was not directly in front of her.  So I did what everyone else was doing, I got my short lens and flash ready.  It was already dark outside and so I adjusted my settings.  As she came out…  Let’s just say that I got what I needed.  Everyone else continued with her down the street and I decided to grab some coffee.

Famed photographer Henri Cartier Bresson would at times stake out his subjects. Walker Evans would descend into the New York subway during the forties with his Contax camera hidden in his overcoat to capture daily life in the greatest city in the world. Were these great photographers Paparazzi?

Patrick Dempsey took a little drive down to the United Talent Agency for a two hour meeting and he went there in style. He drove a classic convertible car but had trouble staying on the proper side of the road! Patrick cruised all the way down the middle of the road until he got to the traffic light and then it seemed he got things straightened out.
