Kate Winslet a Class Act On and Off Screen
The gorgeous Kate Winslet has recently garnered media attention winning an Emmy for playing Mildred Pierce in the HBO mini-series of the same name. It is the most recent award in a long list of nominations and wins, such as a Screen Actor’s Guild award, two BAFTA-awards, two Golden Globes, and an Oscar for “The Reader”. After her mega box office hit “Titanic” in 1997, people expected her to keep starring in blockbusters, but Winslet said she “never saw Titanic as a springboard for bigger films or bigger pay checks”, knowing that “it could have been that, but would have destroyed [her].” Instead she played in low budget and independent films, interspersed with some more mainstream Hollywood productions, such as “The Holiday”. No matter what critics said, no matter how much the movie grossed at the box office, no matter if she got nominated for awards, Winslet stayed true to herself, only getting involved in projects that truly intrigued her, and continually challenging herself.
She’s been known to actively oppose the arbitrary rules Hollywood sets for what actresses’ bodies are supposed to look like. However, it’s not just Hollywood and the US media that would like to dictate female appearances. Back in 2003, Winslet made waves when she issued a statement about her cover photo on the British version of GQ magazine. About the photo she had to say: “I actually have a Polaroid that the photographer gave me on the day of the shoot… I can tell you they’ve reduced the size of my legs by about a third. The retouching is excessive. I do not look like that and more importantly I don’t desire to look like that.” Since then other “enhanced” female celebrities have come out in the open to publicly oppose having parts of their bodies cut off photographically to give an illusion of perfection. Thanks to Kate, the trail has been blazed!
More recently in September 2010, Winslet lend her voice to the documentary “A Mother’s Courage: Talking back to Autism”, which was also aired on HBO. As a result of her involvement, she founded the non-profit “The Golden Hat”, which is an organization raising awareness about autism and actively removing barriers by giving people with autism the resources to communicate effectively, get an education and find a job. For this charity work, Kate received the Yo Dona award for “Best Humanitarian Work” earlier this year.
