This actor grew up in a small town in the Midwest and lived in poverty for most of his childhood. He was so ashamed of his roots, in his early acting career he never did interviews about his background or past. When he first got into the business, he spent most of his money and energy on lavish homes and cars to compensate, almost ruining him financially. Since his marriage and becoming a father, he’s now shifting his focus and just last month, made a sizable anonymous donation to a local children’s shelter by selling an exotic car and donating the proceeds.

Oscar winning actress Natalie Portman has it all: a glamorous acting career, a hot fiancé (New York City Ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied), and an adorable infant son. But there is much more to the hauntingly beautiful face than meets the eye. “I don’t care if [college] ruins my career,” Portman has said. “I’d rather be smart than a movie star.” She graduated with a BA in psychology from Harvard, has co-authored two research papers which were published in scientific journals, and has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University. As if that wasn’t enough to intimidate everyone around her, she’s also fluent in Hebrew, and has studied French, German, Japanese and Arabic.
Portman has been a vegetarian since childhood, and is a passionate activist for animal rights, environmental causes, and anti-poverty campaigns. She has traveled abroad and within the States as a spokesperson for FINCA International, an organization which promotes microloans for female small business owners in developing countries. She’s been engaged in political campaigning for democratic presidential candidates, such as John Kerry and Barack Obama. But even though she’s got a lot going for her, she’s never taken herself too seriously (remember her gangsta rap on SNL?).
